Why honor is so important for a church, part II

Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. 1 Peter 2:17

There is a segment of Christianity who feels that only God deserves honor. However pious this may sound, the Bible makes it evident that we demonstrate honor to God by following his word, which clearly states that we should honor everyone. This would be an indictment against such behaviors as gossip, hate, slander, murmuring, rebellion against godly pastors, etc. If we truly want to honor God, then we must demonstrate honor, again defined as demonstrating respect to someone because of the high respect we have for them.

To repeat from my last post, honor can be defined as demonstrating respect, as we learn from its Greek derivative, “timao,” which Strong’s reveals is tantamount to “fix a valuation upon; by implication, to revere.”

The following is a specific list of people the Bible says we should honor:

  1. Honor your father and your mother (Exodus 20:12)
  2. Honor our spouse (1 Peter 3:7)
  3. Honor our elders (Leviticus 19:32)
  4. Honor widows (1 Timothy 5:3)
  5. Our spiritual leaders (1 Timothy 5:17)
  6. Our spiritual brethren (Romans 12:10)
  7. Our bosses, supervisors, and employers (1 Timothy 6:1)
  8. Our political leaders (Romans 13:1)
  9. Honor God

As the list reveals, to truly please God we must live a life of honor to all men…
