My notes from Acts 2:1-13

God bless you! Here are my notes from my Bible study on Acts 2:1-13. We celebrate our Pentecostal distinctive and still believe that the Holy Spirit moves in our age!

Two things: Covenant by Fire and the new apostolic license.

Notes: Pentecost was also called the Festival of Harvest and was held 50 days after Passover (what we know celebrate as Easter). It was one of three major annual Jewish festivals (Deut. 16:16) and celebrated thanksgiving for the harvested crops.  Jews from many nations came to Jerusalem to celebrate this, and therefore the first converts to Christianity would be from an international—not only Jewish—audience.

Covenant by Fire

  • Tongues of Fire were present as the church entered into a new age (Grace).
    • Tongues symbolize speech and communication of the Gospel (Good News)
    • Fire symbolizes God’s purifying presence, burning away the undesirable in our lives and setting our lives on fire for God!
    • Exodus 19:16-18: Fire confirmed the Law
    • Acts 2: God confirms the era of the Holy Spirit with Fire

The apostolic license

  • God’s desire was that “all” could find salvation (John 3:16)
  • In the Old Testament, God spoke through prophets who were His “mouthpiece.” Tongues were given to all, symbolizing that now we all can serve as messengers of the Good News (witnesses, Acts 1:8).
  • Everyone being filled with the Holy Spirit details that now God has a personal connection to all of his followers, thanks to Jesus and his work on the Cross. Now there is no separation between God and people (see Hebrews 8-10).
  • How can we explain the similarities to being drunk?
    • God’s glory (OT: kabod, NT:doxa) refers to weight. They were literally containing the glory of God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
