Sermon Recap: Face Your Giants

Have you ever had a moment where a person, problem, or your past seemed to hold you back from being the person God wanted you to be?

This was the case of the Israelites when they encountered Goliath—a nearly ten foot tall giant who was the champion of the enemy Philistines. He was so big and strong, the Bible describes his armor to weigh 125 pounds and just the tip of his spear weighed 15 pounds. This guy was an intimidating figure.

1 Samuel 17:8-11 records the story of this giant coming out and mocking the Israelite army. When he called them out their reaction was fear and trembling. Goliath was winning the war just by his appearance and words.

This represents so many people, whose fear cause them to fear in the presence of their own giants. Life seems so intimidating, and our problems speak to us and make us want to give up. We lack the boldness not because we’ve lost the fight, but because we’re afraid to enter into the fray.

I want to encourage you today with these three facts. I pray that they help you realize that through Christ, we are MORE than conquerors! (see Romans 8:28).

#1- Jesus is constantly at work within us!

2 Corinthians 5:17 states: “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

The Bible clearly states that we are more than a reconstruction project. We are a NEW creation in Christ. The moment you came to faith in the Lord, your past, your problems, and even those negative people lose influence over us because they are no longer applicable. We are NEW in Christ!

Ephesians 2:10 confirms that we are God’s masterpiece. Remember God does NOT create junk. If God created a new person, that means that he creates the very best possible. Don’t believe the lies of the enemy; you are VALUABLE in the eyes of the Lord!

#2- God’s love is your most powerful weapon!

I have three kids, ages 7, 4, and 2. They have spit up on me, vomited on me, lost my things, broken my things, and have been the most work ever in my life. However, no matter what they’ve done or what they are going to do, I’m confident I will always love them, because they are MINE!

God feels the same way, because we are HIS! Galatians 3:26 tells us “For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”

Come on… let’s be rational. Do we really think that God wants bad things for you? Do you feel that God will abandon us in our moments of trouble? Do you think God is pleased when we suffer under the attack of the enemy?

Absolutely not… because the Bible tells me so.

Matthew 7:11 states “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

God wants the VERY best for you! God’s love is your most powerful weapon. He will always watch out for you.

#3- I am what the Bible says I am!

There are so many verses that speak to our victory. But the concept here is that God chose David, not because of what society thought of him, but because David’s heart was with him. Consider 1 Samuel 16:7: But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

The question that remains is, “Has God chosen me as well?” Does God desire for me to kill giants like David did?

And the answer is emphatically “YES!”

Consider Colossians 3:12-17, 2 Thessalonians 2:13, 1 Peter 2:9, John 15:15, and Romans 8:33-35. All these verses CONFIRM that you have been chosen to conquer the giants in your life!

Ephesians 1:4-5 states “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”

Adoption is an interesting term used here in scripture. When a couple goes to adopt, they do so purposefully and with intention to choose the child that will be for them (as opposed to married people, who sometimes have that “oops, we’re pregnant moment”). Imagine, before the world was formed, GOD CHOSE YOU! HE WANTED YOU!

Don’t listen to the negativity out there. The enemy and negative people will try to tell you that you aren’t destined to be the person you were created to be. They’ll tell you that you will fail like everyone else. They’ll tell you that your past will always hang over your head and hold you down.

You were created for so much more! Just believe it!!!

John 11:40: “Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”
